Role impact:

The Communications Specialist will manage and support the development and implementation of high quality external communication initiatives. They will be a skilled public and media relations practitioner supporting CF's overall Marketing, Brand and Innovation team and retail shopping centres. The Senior Specialist will have an excellent understanding of the media, social media and public relations market in Canada with focus on retail, business and lifestyle, as well as be a strong writer with a pulse on current events and popular culture to help inform communications approaches. 


What you will deliver:

Media relations for Marketing, Brand and Innovation - 60%

  • Amplify national and regional marketing campaigns with strategic PR programs; working in development with agency partners to execute PR and media relations 
  • Support retail property teams with targeted communications to support individual properties and their retail clients
  • Produce external communications materials (including press releases, articles, key messages, holding statements, reactive talking points, QAs, and executive briefing documents)
  • Oversee PR tracking for all national/regional marketing programs and announcements 
  • Monitor emerging trends and identify new communications opportunities
  • Manage media and filming requests in accordance with internal protocols and procedures


Community management - 20%

  • Lead response plans for all social media issues that are escalated through social media monitoring tools, including collaborating with PR agencies, digital agencies and internal clients.
  • Liaise with the business lead, Sr. Manager, External Communications, to mitigate reputational and operational risks by preparing and responding to issues  that arise on social media (e.g. evenings and weekends).
  • In partnership with Marketing, maintain social media escalation tracker and contact list for internal use and agency use

Media training - 10 %

  • Support the Sr. Manager, External Communications in the creation and rollout of national media training for Canadian operations
  • Maintain media training tracker and ensure enrollment of all new hires, and refresher training for current staff


Administrative- 10%

  • Event coordination, as required (media events).
  • Update and manage the company media relations calendar annually and quarterly


 What your strengths are:

  • A demonstrated understanding of external communication strategies and tactics, including measurement techniques.
  • Demonstrated superior project management and organizational skills.
  • Superior editing skills with strong attention to detail.  Demonstrated experience in writing and coordinating the production of communications materials including annual reports, brochures, articles, news releases and newsletters.
  • Strong interpersonal/human relations/management skills for interacting with all levels of organization with a focus on influencing and collaborating.
  • Proven ability to strategically and effectively develop and implement communication plans and programs.
  • Understanding of social media tools and how they interact with traditional media relations


What you need to succeed:      

  • University degree and/or College diploma/certificate in English, Communications.
  • Minimum three-to-five years’ experience in a Corporate Communications or Public Relations role.
  • Proven track record of dealing with media and established network of media relationships would be an asset.
