Role impact:

Review and manage the timely preparation of tax returns, tax projections and tax provisions of varying complexity in a timely and efficient manner with accuracy and completeness; research and analyze tax issues as requested; assist on special projects; provide service to internal and external parties to allow efficient performance in regard to tax matters; provide guidance and feedback to members of the tax team to assist with the preparation of the above and drive efficiencies in the department; and assist with responding to income and commodity tax audits.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Through the provision of regular feedback in the form of status meetings, coaching and counseling and the assignment of developmental projects:

  • manages the activities of all indirect reports to ensure the timely achievement of department goals, within prescribed policies, procedures and standard business practices;
  • delegates work as appropriate to ensure optimal utilization of resources and to provide opportunities for group members to grow professionally; and
  • provides regular motivation and mentoring to all staff to encourage on-going professional development.


Functional Responsibilities:

  • Manages the completion of tax projects, provisions, and returns by working with all members of the tax team to set, monitor and manage internal and external timelines that ensures the timely and accurate reporting of information within statutory obligations and accounting practices.
  • Reviews tax returns, tax projections, tax provisions and associated working papers to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, internal control procedures, appropriate and consistent tax treatment of inclusions and deductions and completeness of transactions reported.  Tax filing alternatives and tax risks should also be identified.  The review should also be undertaken with a view to identifying tax planning opportunities and process enhancements.
  • Develops and improves departmental information flows by analyzing information requirements and sources and seeking efficiencies in processing to improve overall value of the task or function.
  • Assists in providing responses to  governmental and external auditors as required.
  • Assists the Senior Directors, Taxation with ongoing monitoring and maintenance of Canadian and International structures and tax obligations
  • Research and assist on assignments by examining specific tax legislation and court decisions and relevant publications to identify available options and determine recommended tax treatment.
  • Respond to income and commodity tax requests and special projects from corporate wide accounting professionals by identifying issues and providing information and recommendations to service internal client base effectively.
  • Communicates and advises on income and commodity tax issues and related information through verbal or written correspondence which clearly indicates the tax consequences of structures and transactions in order to ensure relevant parties recognize the tax effect of past and proposed transactions and contain costs.
  • Assists in implementing planning initiatives. 
  • Develops and communicates technical tax expertise by monitoring current developments in technical journals, conferences, legislation and tax administration and recommending revisions of existing practices in order to ensure tax compliance efforts minimize taxes, maintain tax exemptions and reflect industry best practices when appropriate.

What you need to succeed:      

  • University Degree - Business related major; Parts I and II of the CICA In-depth
  • CPA Designation
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in corporate income tax, with at least 2 years supervisory experience, (exposure to Real Estate or Property Management an asset)
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian income tax law and administration, financial accounting principles and practices, exposure to foreign jurisdictions (US, UK, Latin America) would be an asset
  • Theory behind statutes and interpretation
  • Knowledge of commodity tax law and administration would be an asset
  • Exposure to Canadian tax exempt entities and Pension Benefits Standards Act would be an asset
  • Computer literate and proficient in Excel, tax preparation packages and tax research software
