Role Impact:

The Senior Manager, Security & Life Safety is responsible for leadership and management of the functional, technical and applied security and life safety program at properties that have a high public profile, or are a complex mixed-use property of both office and retail offerings, or are situated as challenging and high-volume urban properties. Reporting to the General Manager with a supplementary reporting line to National Security Operations (NSO), this position is ultimately responsible for the effective and efficient execution of all operational aspects of the Security and Life Safety Department. A significant responsibility of this role is the implementation, upkeep and testing of emergency response plans to ensure the property is adequately prepared to deal with a wide range of potential risk events.

What you will deliver:

  • Provide subject matter expertise on S&LS operations and technologies
  • Responsible for the regulatory and practical elements of the occupational health & safety, fire safety, and general life safety requirements at the property
  • Accountable for bringing together and leading across the variety of functional roles, including Security, Operations, Marketing and otherwise, where the collaborative effort is required to fulfill the regulatory requirements for health and safety, fire systems and general life safety
  • Responsible for collecting and reporting performance data to NSO for quarterly reporting and to support corporate business objectives
  • Responsible for collecting and reporting monthly stats to relevant 3rd party partners (ie City of Calgary)
  • Stimulates continual improvement practices (long and short-term outlooks) in operations and innovative technology that caters to high-risk and/or sophisticated tenant requirements.
  • Creates, reviews and approves budgets ensuring annual expenditures align with security operating strategies, business models, technology standards, and principles prior to review and sign-off by the GM, VPs Operations, or higher
  • Ensure accruals are completed in a timely manner, monitor monthly expenditures to ensure on budget at year end.
  • Establish and maintain key contacts with retail and professional tower clients, public authority, suppliers, and security industry partners; including local police, fire and emergency medical services representatives
  • Develop, measure and oversee the delivery, efficiency, purchasing, and implementation of security technologies. Ensuring that all installations comply to national standards and deliver on strategic business objectives
  • Prepare projections, and costs for the property relating to physical security and security technology for annual operational expenditures and 10-year capital plans
  • Recommend Security related capital projects, work with internal and external resources (ie consultants) to put together RFP's, business cases to execution with all relevant approvals.
  • Ongoing oversight to ensure all aspects of the S&LS management program are assessed and updated regularly to remain current with Cadillac Fairview standards and leading industry practice, and to continually achieve operational and fiscal efficiency
  • Oversee and ensure all internal and external audits are completed on time and meet internal and external expectations, standards.  Ensure all follow up items are completed within prescribed timelines.
  • Oversee and execute the implementation of a security strategy via regular and ongoing liaison with National Security Operations and property management to ensure a consistent level of service delivery and financial effectiveness
  • As part of a commitment to continual improvement, conduct reviews of internal property business processes in areas such as security operating practices e.g. use of force, emergency management, fire safety systems and procedures, H&S and business continuity, and make broadly applicable policy and procedural changes to close gaps.
  • Oversee, manage and mentor a team of 25+ hourly personnel including Manger I, Security & Life Safety; Four Supervisors and Guards.  Including conducting annual performance reviews & quarterly coaching.
  • Oversee and manage any/all third party supplemental guards as required.

What you need to succeed:

  • Community college diploma in a related field of Security and Life Safety, Risk Management or Criminology (or equivalent business management qualification)
  • Four-year undergraduate or college degree or post-graduate studies up to and including Master’s Degree is an asset
  • A minimum of 7 years working in a commercial real estate security and life safety environment, or equivalent – or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of security and life safety management experience, ideally at a series of properties of increasingly complex scope – or equivalent work experience
  • Professional security industry accreditation, including (CPP, ASP, PSP)
