Role Summary:

This role is responsible for managing the functional technical and applied Life safety program at a high-profile, mixed-use urban property while delivering best in class service.  This role is responsible to remain abreast of emerging life safety trends and ensure the property life safety program is equipped to address evolving risks and life safety needs.  An important responsibility of this role is the upkeep and testing of emergency response plans to ensure the property is adequately prepared to deal with a wide range of potential risk events.


What you will deliver:

  • Oversee maintenance and use of Life Safety systems within the facility to ensure high standards and cost effective services 
  • Develop and maintain Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity Plans.
  • Provide training to all building staff to effectively deal with any disaster situation.
  • Work closely with Security and Life Safety staff in emergency preparedness exercises and drills.
  • Ensure property compliance with third party and internal programs/systems. 
  • Communicate emergency procedures and evacuation plans to all tenants and staff.
  • Schedule and conduct fire drills to practice procedures and skills.
  • Enforce Building and Fire Codes and NFPA standards. Address Fire Code violations and safety hazards within the property to maintain compliance. 
  • Oversee the day-to-day duties of the Fire and Life Safety Department.
  • Supervise, and provide coaching and mentoring to unionized Life Safety staff.
  • Liaise with staff and tenants through regular meetings to provide and maintain the highest level of Life Safety services and resolve issues.
  • Provide guidance to tenants on Emergency Preparedness planning and Business continuity.
  • Assist in negotiating majority service contracts for the Fire and Life Safety Department and ensure contractor compliance to agreed standards.
  • Co-chair the Centre’s Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Oversee maintenance and use of Life Safety systems within the facility to ensure high standard, cost-effective service.
  • Review new technology, systems and trends in Life Safety to ensure best value services for current and long-term planning.
  • Attend all on-site construction meetings and reports any noted deficiencies to the Senior Manager of Security and Life Safety for appropriate follow-up actions.
  • Ensure contractors working in rented spaces and construction sites on the property follow rules and regulations to eliminate fire and health and safety hazards.

What you need to succeed:

  • Post-secondary graduate of recognized Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Prevention; Emergency Management Program an asset. 
  • Seven years or more in Fire and Life Safety Industry, or equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Professional accreditations from NFPA or IFE would be an asset.
  • CFAA Certification as fire alarm technical asset.
  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical Systems, Smoke Control Systems, Fire Pumps and Emergency Generators.
  • Courses in budgeting, labour relations and management/leadership would be an asset.
  • Good knowledge of industry-related techniques, technology and trends.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of applicable federal, provincial and municipal codes and standards relating to fire and life safety.
