Role impact:

Prepare tax provisions, tax projections and tax returns of various complexity in a timely and efficient manner with accuracy and completeness:  to analyze and research tax issues as requested; to assist on special projects; to provide service to internal and external parties to allow efficient performance in regard to tax matters.

 

What you will deliver:

  •  Prepare tax returns, income tax projections, tax provisions and associated working papers by reviewing prior years’ returns and working papers, analyzing financial information, meeting with team members across the organization and reviewing files for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, internal control procedures, appropriate and consistent tax treatment of inclusions and deductions and completeness of transactions reported.  Tax filing alternatives and tax risks should also be identified.  The preparation should be undertaken with a view to identifying tax planning opportunities and process enhancements.
  • Prepare tax installment schedules by comparing expected and previous taxes payable ensuring accurate and timely tax payments as required by the relevant legislation.
  • Review Canadian tax provisions prepared by portfolio property accountants by analyzing financial statement information and tax provisions as supplied and communicating findings to property accountants in order to ensure the appropriate tax liability or refund is provided for in the financial statements.
  • Review tax accounts to ensure cumulative tax liability or refund is properly reflected in financial statements.
  • Assist in providing responses to governmental and external auditors as required.
  • Research and assist on issues, as assigned, by examining specific tax legislation and court decisions and relevant publications to identify available options and determine recommended tax treatment.
  • Respond to requests and special projects from company wide accounting professionals by identifying issues and providing information and recommendations to service internal client base effectively.
  • Develop and communicate technical tax expertise by monitoring current developments in technical journals, conferences, legislation and tax administration and recommending revisions of existing practices in order to ensure tax compliance efforts maximize tax savings and efficiencies on a company-wide basis.
  • Develop and improve departmental information flows by analyzing information requirements and sources and seeking efficiencies in processes to improve overall value of the function.

What you need to succeed:     

  • A University Degree - Business related major
  • CPA In-Depth Tax Course (would be an asset)
  • CPA designation
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in corporate income tax (exposure to Real Estate/Property Management an asset)
  • A solid knowledge of income tax law and administration, financial accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge of commodity tax law and administration (would be an asset)
